Every day thousands of Tanzanian communities and neighborhoods are being littered with plastic materials that are not biodegradable due to the lack of public waste collection. Consequently, people currently burn plastic waste or bury it underground because of the lack of alternatives. Not only does this severely harm the environment. It also affects animals who consume plastics and contaminated water which in turn affects the health of people eating beef, chicken, and other kinds of meat. This project named “TRASHEROES” aims to solve the problem of unconscious plastic littering in Tanzanian communities by educating people about the importance of proper plastic disposal next to the core activity of distributing waste containers in accessible locations which allow for efficient waste collection. In collaboration with community leaders and local schools, we want to especially target school children with the education of plastic disposal including recycling ideas. As they can easily change their habits and teach parents as well as friends about what they learned in terms of environmental sustainability, TRASHEROES gains ambassadors who share and support our project every day. Ultimately, the goal is to involve local politics such as the Mwanza City Council which will become aware of the movement and start building a widespread system of efficient waste collection.
