About

Learn a little bit about this organization

Matteo Bertero English Centre of Kinh Mon village is the first educational project of Oxford Omnia, a trasnational non-profit organization with the mission to support a community-based approach to advance human dignity, international development, food security, and environmental sustainability, we support the MB English Centre. Oxford Omnia currently operates in the UK, US, Italy, Zambia and Vietnam. We have over 30 volunteers for teaching, food security, the think tank, administration, outreach, and social media. They are primarily youth, and come from more than 10 countries, including Ethiopia, Syria, Romania, France, Ireland, the US, Canada, Italy, Turkey, Germany and the UK. Kinh Mon is a rural village in Northern Vietnam two hours far from main touristic sites: Hanoi and Ha Long Bay, UNESCO World Heritage site. Our founders of our school, Elena Bernini and Luong Mura, were born in the District of Kinh Mon and adopted at a young age by two Italian families. Elena Bernini has an MPhil Degree in International Development from Oxford University and has accumulated expertise in project management of nonprofits work in developing countries; Luong Mura has a Master Degree in Architecture from Turin Polytechnic School and has led the school’s construction work, building on his previous experience with architectural firms. Luong and Elena grew up with the drive of going back to their motherland and giving back to their community. Giving back means using their knowledge and means to inspire and mentor children towards the achievement of their full academic and leadership potential, which will have a positive spillover effect on their communities. With generous private donations from Luong Mura, in only three months we were able to develop the school and start classes in December 2017. 130 students enrolled on its opening day. As of May 2018, the school gives classes to approximately 300 students, for ages 8 to 20. Matteo Bertero English Centre was founded in honour of Matteo Bertero, a young and brilliant student who died at a very young age in 2014 and who was one of Elena’s best friends. Matteo, and probably you that are reading this pages and are interested in taking part in this project, are people who both dare to take risks and do the right thing, and care for the community around you. “Dare and Care” is the motto of the MB English Centre. The teaching method at MB English Centre involves teaching students around these two pillars. Students are encouraged to dare to take risks and make mistakes as an opportunity for learning and growth. Students express critical thinking, ask the tough questions on why this is so, how it can improve, and what is the right thing to do. We encourage strong attention to creativity, which ultimately will stimulate insights and leadership. Students are educated to care for the local community, but also to see the interconnections of local challenges with global issues, such as climate change, food security, human dignity, and locally-innovated civil society solutions around the world. Students will greatly benefit from the variety of viewpoints that international volunteers will bring them and will be encouraged to proactively think what they can do to address those issues.
