About

Learn a little bit about this organization

Uniper Benelux (UBX) is a utility company, part of Uniper. Uniper is a leading international energy company, active in over 40 countries with about 13,000 employees. Its main business is reliable provision of energy and related services. Uniper Benelux is also active in the energy sales market, and with 2900 MW of installed electric production capacity it is a major producer in the Netherlands. Besides electricity, UBX delivers heat to district heating systems and it generates steam for industrial customers. On the electricity market, a generation schedule has to be determined day-ahead. However, due to weather forecasting errors, the amount of heat we need to produce is still uncertain one day ahead. As the ratio between heat and power output is constrained, we need to make a day ahead decision on how much heat we will produce with our CHP. Any differences between our heat demand forecast and realization need to be filled by our boilers, which are less efficient and generate more CO2. At this moment, our optimization models are deterministic, which means they can only handle a single expected electricity price and a single heat forecast. Based on these expectations, we make our day-ahead schedules. Adding multiple price-demand scenario scenarios makes this model stochastic, which means we can make more robust decisions about our generation schedule. We currently developed a theoretical model stating a new formulation of the combined heat and power system. We are looking for a trainee to add stochastics to this model. This (optimization) model should be built in GAMS. We are looking for a trainee with the passion to go into details of a problem, and determine and implement a solution. Intern in expected to gain insights in how the portfolio can be optimised under price and demand uncertainty. And find a tool that can be used to execute this optimization. The trainee will be part of a small task force (3 people), responsible for the optimization tools used within the company. This task force is part of a bigger section in the company (around 50 people), responsible for the bridge between generation and sales. Key responsibilities for trainee will be: 1. Research functioning of combined heat&power plants (CHP’s) 2. Determine optimalisation strategy for GHP’s 3. Work on tool to automate optimalization and bidding strategy. An operation research background is beneficial but not required. Technically it is important to have basic knowledge about a programming language like R, Python or Matlab. Experience with GAMS is a benefit.
