The Igqangi Project is an education and school development initiative based in the Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Our primary focus is on bringing skilled volunteers to the area and Baleni Senior Secondary School – a rural school in partnership with the project and poised to support the surrounding community. It is here where extra tuition, mentorships, sport coaching, conversational English and building workshops are organised. The volunteer packages we offer are designed to offer short to long term stays where volunteers join a team of people doing their bit to benefit the school and community whilst living in and exploring a breathtaking part of the world. The work we’ve done over the past five years has shown encouraging results; our workshops are well attended; we’ve been enthusiastically embraced by the learners, staff and local community; and the performance of Baleni’s grade 12 learners has improved immensely. In 2009 the school had a grade 12 pass rate of 40%, in 2012, this was up to 88.4%! To consolidate and build on these gains, a team of Igqangi tutors are now preparing to relocate to Baleni for a final exams support program that will run for the remainder of 2013. This program includes extra classes, past-paper revision workshops, and question-and-answer sessions. Working six days a week, we intend to offer the grade 12 learners with effective, hands-on support as they prepare for and write their final examinations. Home to both mud-schools and world-class institutions, the inequalities in South Africa’s education system are widely recognised. As students and graduates from top public universities, we come from a minority of South Africans fortunate enough to have obtained an outstanding education from the public system. This privileged role comes with a special responsibility to assist those who are being left behind by that same system. South Africa invests substantial resources in education – our goal is to ensure a wider and more equitable spread of the benefits from this investment.
