Project
The project aims to impact SDG #15 by building up communities' capacity to respond and act upon the degradation of natural habitat, diversity loss, and the protection of wildlife.

Take urgent and significant action to reduce the degradation of natural habitats, halt the loss of biodiversity and, by 2020, protect and prevent the extinction of threatened species.

Role

Project Activities

Week 1
Introducing the mangrove ecosystem and explaining the importance functions and the services of LMM&LC
Onboarding space with partner representatives to understand the current scenario, beneficiaries and discuss about the outcome of the project
Create an implementation plan on how the project should unfold and determine materials to be used
Preparing the activities that will be done in the following weeks and receiving feedback from the partners and AIESEC
Run the initial assessment needed for measuring the outcome/impact of the project
Introductory session with the beneficiaries, presentation of the volunteers and project objectives.
Importance of mangroves and threats to mangrove conservation in Sri Lanka
Introducing the faunal diversity related to mangrove eco system
Introducing the mangrove species in Sri Lanka and their distribution
Week 2
Preparation of plant nursery (Target-1000 plants)
Activities with youth society of LMM&LC
Game: Scavenger hunt to find the signs of degradation in the habitat
Activity: Mapping out the root causes of habitat degradation with community members
Round table: Watching documentaries about ecosystem and debating the topic of what can humans do to prevent ecosystems degradation
Workshop: Importance of biodiversity and how protecting animals supports ecosystems.
Workshop: SDG 15 and the negative impact of of natural habitat degradation and loss of biodiversity for the future.

Field Observation 1st Day Lagoon and mangrove observation
Week 3
Workshop: How to create safe habitats for local wildlife, such as birds, insects, or small mammals.

Field Observation 2nd Day Observation Fishing techniques

Workshop: How to take care of the place we're living in (our ecosystem)?
Fieldwork: run activities in animal rescue centers
Run a local event on the NGO/school to launch the accountability system and strive to have a local representative leader signing the commitment.
Activity: Create an accountability system in the community for the conservation of nature around them
Week 4
Fieldwork: run activities in animal rescue centers
Activities with youth society of LMM&LC
Preparation of plant nursery (Target-1000 plants)
Field Observation 3rd Day Data collection for mini research

Museum related activities
Workshop: How to protect endangered species?
Activity: Run a challenge/competition within participant to make lifestyle choices that are less harmful to endangered species
Activity: Species ambassadors to protect the endangered species of the area/region
Field trip in the area to analyse degradation of natural habitats and main issues with the local ecosystem and endangered species.
Week 5
Lagoon based Clean up program
Activity: Run a fundraising campaign for the protection of a specific endangered specie or natural habitat
Create a short film/reel/article about a species or degradation in the region and showcase it on social media or with different PR partners (such as blogs)
Plan an engaging and informative Open Doors Day event that raises community awareness about animal adoption and endangered species
Dynamic: Work together to design a wildlife-friendly garden for the community
Dynamic: Do an open doors day at the partner in which the community can learn more about the animals, learn about adoption opportunities, and support shelters' missions.

Field Observation 4th Day Seedling Collection for plant nursery
Preparation of plant nursery (Target-1000 plants)
Activities with youth society of LMM&LC
Week 6
Closing day with beneficiaries
Analyse data to determinate outcome/impact results (level of awareness of beneficiaries post-project activities).
Museum related activities
Collect data from beneficiaries (you can use surveys, interviews, focus groups, etc.)
Lagoon based Clean up program
Scientific Article preparation on mangrove related topics
Preparation of plant nursery (Target-1000 plants)
Debrief the impact of the project, how the beneficiaries developed, discuss about what went well and even better if and include this in the report
Build final project report and presented to AIESEC members and NGO/non-profit representatives.
