The project aims to contribute to SDG #4 by providing and opening space for quality education for people of all ages, ensuring educational opportunities from initial literacy to other subjects such as mathematics, science and languages.

Role

Project Activities

Week 1
Coaching Methodology Training (Kids Focus): Training on MAC’s children’s lesson structure, age-appropriate drills, and positive reinforcement techniques.
Shadowing: Observe morning and afternoon Kids’ lessons. Coaching Methodology Training (Adults Focus): Training on adult stroke correction, fear management techniques, and managing different fitness levels. Shadowing: Observe beginner/intermediate Adults’ lessons
Local Culture & Basic Communication Workshop: Cultural sensitivity training and learning basic Sinhala phrases relevant to the pool
Welcome & Club Orientation: Welcome session, club tour, meet MAC staff and coaches. Introduction to MAC’s mission and vision. Review of volunteer schedule and code of conduct.
Water Safety & First Aid Training: Intensive review of pool-side safety, emergency procedures and water rescue techniques. MAC’s specific pool rules.
Week 2
Assisted Teaching (Kids): Volunteers are assigned to different children's groups (beginner/intermediate). Focus on specific tasks: 1:1 float assistance, demonstrating simple drills, maintaining order.
Mid-Week Review & Drill Brainstorm: Reflection session with MAC Head Coach. Volunteers document common student errors observed. They prepare 2-3 innovative warm-up or skill-building drills for kids and adults.
Assisted Teaching (Adults): Support adult lessons. Focus on lane management, providing immediate feedback on stroke technique (under coach supervision), and timing sets.
Week 3
Stroke Specialization: One volunteer focuses on Breathing & Body Position for the week. The second focuses on Turns & Underwater Kicking. They create simple visual aids (posters/handouts) to support their focus area.
Lead Activity Block: Volunteers are given 10-15 minutes in both children's and adult's lessons to implement the new drills they developed in Week 2.
Workshop Preparation: Volunteers finalize plans for their Week 4 cultural exchange workshop/activity based on feedback from coaches and student interaction.
Week 4
Lesson Lead (Supervised): Volunteers each take the lead on a 20-minute segment of a class, managing a full small group/lane from start to finish under coach supervision.
Cultural Exchange Workshop (Children): Volunteers run a fun, interactive session introducing games, songs, or simple traditions from their home country. (Focus on movement/energy).
Cultural Exchange Workshop (Adults, Coaches): Volunteers lead a conversational session on topics like sports culture, common misunderstandings, or travel tips from their home country.
Community Service Day / Pool Maintenance: Engage in a light maintenance project (e.g., organizing equipment, minor cleaning) or assist in administrative tasks like lesson sign-ups.
