Project
The project aims to impact SDG #14 by providing communities that live near marine and coastal areas, with concrete activities to improve the sustainability of the coast and protect marine wildlife that inhabit these ecosystems.

By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution

Role

Project Activities

Week 1
Run the initial assessment needed for measuring the outcome/impact of the project
Introductory session with the beneficiaries, presentation of the volunteers and project objectives.
Onboarding space with partner representatives to understand the current scenario, beneficiaries and discuss about the outcome of the project
Support Diving Operations and digital marketing activities.
Research and get knowledge with the help of opportunity provider about SDG 14, marine and coastlines ecosystems of the area and the issues that Sri Lanka ecosystems is facing.
Visit the nearby coastlines/beaches of the area, identify main point of pollution and contaminants. Determinate needed actions to protect the area.
Understand the working environment and the necessary activities that volunteers has to carry on at the diving center.
Create an implementation plan on how the project should unfold and determine materials to be used
Preparing the activities that will be done in the following weeks and receiving feedback from the partners and AIESEC
Week 2
Support Diving Operations and digital marketing activities.
Plan a social media campaign promoting the organization. The campaign should showcase the unique offerings of the center while encouraging people to join hands with the organization in its upcoming marine and coastal preservation efforts.
Organize underwater clean-up activities in collaboration with the opportunity provider to remove waste and protect marine life
Workshop: Understanding Marine Pollution - Raise awareness about marine pollution, its causes, and how participants can contribute to reducing it.
Round table: Watching documentaries about marine ecosystems and debating the topic of what can humans do to prevent ecosystems degradation
Getting knowledge about SDG 14, marine and coastlines ecosystems of the area and the issues that this ecosystems is facing.
Workshop idea: Make Space for Nature. Why Biodiversity is Key to Achieving the Global Goals
Workshop idea: How can we help? Protecting our coastlines and marine ecosystems.
Week 3
Analyze the answers received in the interviews and document on the next steps that could be taken.
Conduct interviews with the support of the opportunity provider with local community members/ customers of the diving center to assess their knowledge and perceptions of marine conservation issues.
Support Diving Operations and digital marketing activities.
Activity: Species ambassadors to protect the endangered species of the area/region
Fieldwork: Visit the coastlines/beaches of the area, identify main point of pollution and contaminants. Determinate needed actions to protect the area.
Let participants do research on how climate change has affected their community (sea level rise, temperature rise, desertification etc.)
Dynamic: Conduct interviews with local community members to assess their knowledge and perceptions of marine conservation issues.
Analyse the answers received in the interviews and have the beneficiaries debate on the next steps that could be taken
Plan a Social Media Awareness Campaign featuring partner organization’s brand to spread awareness on following aspects: 1. Promoting sustainable practices through a zero-waste approach 2. Preventing marine pollution 3. Protecting coral reefs
Week 4
Fieldwork: Visit the coastlines/beaches of the area, identify main point of pollution and contaminants. Determinate needed actions to protect the area.

Organize underwater clean-up activities in collaboration with the opportunity provider to remove waste and protect marine life
Developing Ocean Protection Guidelines – Create a “Local Guideline to Save the Ocean” to educate communities on conservation efforts.
Workshop: The danger of pollution, what plastic do to the ocean.
Practice: Create a "Local Guideline to Save the Ocean".
Workshop: Teach beneficiaries about sustainable fishing practices and how responsible consumption can help protect marine ecosystems.
Practice: Learning easy activities for the preservation of local fauna helping to rescue and rehabilitate marine animals.
Week 5
Support Diving Operations and digital marketing activities.
Fieldwork: Run beach cleaning activities (recollect plastic and other reusable objects)
Reuse: Engage community on building sculptures and artwork with recycled plastic waste.
Fieldwork: Run a activity aim to protect the marine and coastline ecosystem (protecting corals, monitoring endangered species of the area, etc.) Adapt this activity with the reality of the area and the needs of the institution you are volunteer for.
Fielwork: collect water samples from local water bodies and test them for different types of pollutants, such as pH levels, dissolved oxygen, and the presence of harmful substances.
Fieldwork: plant native vegetation along coastal areas to prevent erosion and restore natural habitats, which helps protect marine ecosystems and promotes biodiversity.
Setup an informational booth within the center premises to raise awareness among customers and other local community about ocean protection guidelines by displaying materials.
Conduct a beach cleanup
Week 6
Build final project report and presented to AIESEC members and NGO/non-profit representatives.
Plan a social media campaign showcasing your experience at the diving center, highlighting the unique activities, marine conservation efforts, and unforgettable moments. Encourage others to join and be part of the center.
Analyse data to determinate outcome/impact results (level of awareness of beneficiaries post-project activities).
Support Diving Operations and digital marketing activities.
Debrief the impact of the project, how the beneficiaries developed, discuss about what went well and even better if and include this in the report
Closing day with beneficiaries
Collect data from beneficiaries (you can use surveys, interviews, focus groups, etc.)
